After the recent frightening report from Sardinia, we asked Emanuele Pellizzari , who has been selling bolts for 15 years, to explain some more what to look out for in order to be able to identify dangerous bolts and about other safety measures. While a zinc-plated hanger becomes rusted quickly, and therefore the level of rust define its strength (more rust means weaker), a stainless anchor looks ok, but can hold barely body weight. Given the scale of the rebolting needed, to expect all routes to be safe, we talk about a timeline of a decade and a lot of money. In some areas, more money is needed than probably the return from tourism. The general rule is that grey rock, often is less aggressive to anchors, since the rain, once in a while, washes the protections. Yellow rock (overhangs) is where most problems occur. I personally see no difference between glue ins and bolts in strength and resistance to corrosion, while some believes glue ins are more resistant. Some rocks are more aggressive than others. If a climber is not able to remember the handful shapes of hangers or glue ins used in the word, it should restrain from climbing in marine locations since he can’t judge if the route has been bolted recently, rebolted, and/or which gear has been used. In other words, “stay away if you can’t tell”. Big majority of climbers can’t tell, but they can study, since bolts producers are very few. If a climber does not take the care while climbing to check the protection, he should restrain from climbing in marine locations. Po nedávnom znepokojujúcom reporte zo Sardínie sme sa opýtali Emanuela Pellizzariho, ktorý sa predaju borhákov venuje 15 rokov, na objasnenie situácie a aké sú jeho odporúčania, na čo si dávať pozor a ako identifikovať nebezpečné borháky. "Vo väčšine prímorských lezeckých oblastí boli použité borháky vyrobené z nehrdzavejúcej ocele typu 304 (A2). V niektorých lokalitách sa však už cesty preisťujú za použitia oceli 316 (A4) alebo iných materiálov (titán od firmy Titan Climbing, duplex od Fixe bolts products, oceľ so špeciálnym ošetrením typu 316 od firmy Raumer). Kým pozinkované plakety s nitmi hrdzavejú rýchlo, a teda je ich životnosť závislá na množstve hrdze (čím hrdzavejšie, tým slabšie), klasický borhák z nehrdzavejúcej ocele vyzerá relatívne dobre, i keď v skutočnosti nemusí podržať ani váhu tela. Keď zvážime množstvo ciest, ktoré treba preistiť, aby sme mohli povedať, že sú všetky oblasti bezpečné, bude treba minimálne 10 rokov práce a veľa peňazí. V niektorých oblastiach je pravdepodobne potrebný väčší obnos ako sa reálne môže vrátiť z turizmu. Vo všeobecnosti platí, že šedá skala je menej agresívna na použité istenia, keďže ich dážď sem-tam opláchne od nečistôt. Problematickejšou je žltá skala (ktorá sa často vyskytuje v previsoch). Osobne nevidím žiadny rozdiel medzi lepenými a vŕtaným borhákmi z hľadiska sily a odolnosti voči zahrdzaveniu, aj keď niektorí vravia, že lepené borháky vydržia dlhšie. Niektorý typy skaly sú jednoducho agresívnejšie ako iné. Ak si lezec nie je schopný zapamätať tých niekoľko tvarov a typov borhákov či nitov, ktoré sa používajú po celom svete, on/ona by sa mal/a vyvarovať lezenia v prímorských oblastiach, keďže s najväčšou pravdepodobnosťou nebude vedieť posúdiť, či bola cesta navŕtaná len nedávno, preistená alebo aké materiály či náradie bolo použité na osadenie istení. Inak povedané, "nelez, keď si nie si istý". Veľká väčšina lezcov takéto niečo nevie posúdiť, no dá sa to naštudovať, keďže výrobcov borhákov nie je veľa. Lezec by sa mal takisto vyvarovať lezenia v prímorských oblastiach, ak si nedáva pri lezení pozor na istenia, ktoré používa. Všetky "nové" istenia majú na sebe značku, z akého materiálu sú vyrobené. Tak ako som už hovoril, na overenie, či je istenie bezpečné, si stačí zapamätať menej ako tucet typov borhákov a nitov. Niektorí výrobcovia dokonca označili na svojich isteniach rok výroby. Takže keď sa lezec pri lezení bližšie pozrie, vie určiť typ, materiál a odhadnúť, kedy mohla byť daná cesta navŕtaná či preistená. Najdôležitejšie ale je prispievať, prispievať a znova prispievať k preisťovaniu. Skúste trochu otvoriť peňaženky. Ak lezecká komunita ako celok neprispeje, potom je veľmi pravdepodobné, že budeme musieť rýchlo zabudnúť na lezenie vo viacerých svetových oblastiach v blízkosti mora. Poznámka k použitým materiálom. Výdrž lepidla je takisto otázna, keďže žiadny výrobca nemá výrobok certifikovaný pre použitie v skale a takisto nedá záruku dlhšiu ako 3 roky. Záverom, ak sa chystáte naliezť do cesty, ktorá bola navŕtaná pred viac ako 10 rokmi, určite sa oplatí si dopredu skontrolovať stav istení. Podľa môjho názoru sú z dlhodobého hľadiska najlepším riešením nerezové expanzné borháky. Určite lepšie ako lepené typy z titánu či duplexu." Ďalšie oficiálne informácie od UIAA.

Maurizio Oviglia, ktorý žije na Sardínii hovorí, že prvé takéto prípady sa objavili už v roku 2012 a odvtedy sa borháky typu 304 z nehrdzavejúcej ocele vylomili ešte pri dvadsiatich príležitostiach. Strašidelný je ale fakt, že aj istenia, ktoré sa môžu zdať vo veľmi dobrom stave sa môžu ulomiť kvôli tvorbe prasklín v dôsledku korózie od napätia (SCC - stress corrosion cracking). Tento jav je častý hlavne v prímorských oblastiach. V tejto veci sme sa už spýtali na názor firmy Raumer, ktorá borháky vyrába a novinky prinesieme hneď, ako dostaneme odpoveď. Na tomto odkaze sa nachádza report a varovanie ohľadom hrdzavenia borhákov od UIAA z roku 2015. Maurizio Oviglia by rád varoval všetkých lezcov, aby si dávali pozor, hlavne v oblastiach Biddiriscottai, Casarotto, Millennium a Cala Fuili/Cala Lina. Treba takisto spomenúť, že borháky mali byť zasadené omnoho hlbšie, aby malo očko kontakt so skalou.

Stefano Carnati has done Jungle Speed in Siurana and the 18-year-old confirms previous personal downgradings to 8c+. The first 8c+ suggestion was made by Gabri Moroni in 2012 and since then 8a has reported it as 9a (8c+). Several years ago, 8a said that there will be many down grades to come in the area based on the fact that so many climbers did their first 9a there or just did it very quickly. Next in line for confirmed downgradings: Era Vella and Esclatamasters?

Alex Khazanov has done Meadowlark Lemon 8B+ in Red Rocks and he reports that it has been chipped. Actually, destroying boulders has happened several times over the last years also in Fontainebleau and in Cresciano. "The hold was chipped and because of that it lost all of its friction. It might be slightly more incut but it is very glassy now. I simply cannot understand why would some body chip such a boulder. The truth is that the rock of that boulder is extremely soft and a over use of a simple brush cab change the boulder. Even the few days me and my friends tried it a foot hold got a little smaller just by stepping while climbing. I my opinion that boulder will not stay tye same in 10 years. As for the grade, the chipped hold didn't change much. Now its just a slik artificial small hold. And still a bad hold. Chipping is unforgivable and I cannot understand why would you do something like that. Saying so, its still one of the most beautiful boulders in the world and its worth climbing while we can. Even with a chipped hold."

Gianluca Piras has published a horror video from a 6b+ in Masua, Lovely Licia. The glue-in bolt was just some ten years old but it breaks in his hands after seconds. Maurizio Oviglia, a Sardinia local, says that the first breakage on the island happened in 2012 and later at least another 20 stainless steel 304 bolts have got broken. The terryfying fact is that bolts which appear to be in quite good shape can break as well due to SCC internal stress corrosion cracks, mainly in marine environment. We have asked the bolt manufacturer Raumer to comment and we will follow up. Here is the UIAA report from 2015, warning against stress corrossion. Oviglia would like to spread the info that bolts are at risk, especially in Biddiriscottai, Casarotto, Millennium and Cala Fuili/Cala Lina. It should also be mentioned that the glue-in bolt should have been placed much deeper so that the ring would have contact with the rock.
