In hindsight, taking 8a as a source of truth would have been better in most cases. When we took the decision to go with the guidebook grades, 8a was so messy that it was not an option. The average grade was not shown previously, it was whatever was in the DB, in most cases, the first grade given. Then it got cleaned by us and many moderators, and so by the time we executed on this decision it would have been better to go with 8a. We are looking into the โwrongestโ guidebooks now and fixing grades step by stepโฆ.
Since the merging with Vertical-Life, 8a.nu no longer shows the correct average grade of boulders. Take โGulliver Kanteโ in Magic Wood for example, on 8a.nu 52% gave it 7a+, 30% 7a and only 11% 6c, yet the average grade in the grade distribution (with the little arrow) says 6c, same with the grade in the title.
It gets even weirder with a boulder like โRemixedโ in Zillertal, where literally noone ever gave it 7b+, yet it gets shown as that grade.
My guess is, that nowadays 8a.nu just takes the grade from the Vertical-Life-App (which probably is wrong when it comes to Remixed) and no longer takes into consideration, what the users actually graded. This renders the whole grading process on the website useless.
Would be nice if this could be fixed!
Thanks!
