The 8c onsight of Hirayama was within the border

The 8c onsight (world record) by Yuji Hirayama, White Zombie in Baltzola - Spain, has been questioned. Yuji has sent us his comments where he states that he belayed his friend but looked down. The video of the climb also shows that he began with one pre-clipped carabine and plenty of tick-marks at the crux. We do want to underline that we feel that these procedures are within the border of what is normally called as an onsight ascent by the community nowadays. It is not a violation to belay somewone and later try the same route onsight as long as you don't systematically do it in order to collect beta. Practice and Ethics the climbing communityOne should also bear in mind that the community defintion of onsight has been changed over the last years. Ten years ago you had to place your own carabiners to claim an onsight! "Hi Jens, I heard about this problem and I feel that I should explain something now. At first You should look at what I have done in the past. Big wall on sight, 8b+ on sight Competition? I always take serious attempt. Some challenge that I haven’t done and some challenge that I have succeed. You can think that what I am saying by the time. After that. It is only that you trust me or not. Let’s think about it? I belayed him but only few times when he wanted to try the moves. And I didn’t see him to climb. There is a way to belay eaven without seeing the climber. Anyway, what you trust, it is only inside of you. All the best, Yuji"
Well I guess that nobody thought of the possibility that Yuji looked down while belaying his friend! I mean it's quite unususal. But I think that he speaks the truth and so I don't doubt his words! Yuji's perfomances not only in the past but also in the last years were great and admirable! And I guess he has already achieved that kind of succes and fame where he doesn't need to make wrong statements or to claim ascents which he has never done! Anyway Yuji stays one of the best climbers ever in the history of this sport!
>It is not a violation to belay somewone and later try the same route onsight as long as you don't systematically do it in order to collect beta. Hmmm.... Makes me think. So you suggest for an onsight its ok to look at the leader if the purpose of looking is not collecting beta?
I guess you are automatically collecting data while looking at your partner when he climbs the route!
In my oppinion it goes down to the FACT OF LOOKING OR NOT not THE INTENTIONS as 8a's statement would suggest. You can gain pretty good knowledge of the route while JUST BELAYING, not necesarily BELAYING IN ORDER TO COLLECT BETA. Such approach will blur any borders between onsight and flash.
for me an onsight is a route witch of you have no information at all... the carabine can be put on there can be marks but you don't see noone in the route, you dont know where they fall by belaying, etc... my 2 only 8a's flash would be my 2 first onsight then!
