Castelbianco , Italy ,
also known as Oltrefinale ย outside Finale Liguria .
In particular the Val Pennavaire ย the Castelbianco area
itself, just to the North West of the small coastal town of the Italian Liguria
region, Albenga. Where? Oh you must mean Arco? Nope, this area is relatively
new and wow, southern France
style of climbing, but in small village Italy . Why southern France style
and not Ligurian Italian? Well to most of us North Americans, we know of
Southern France as the uber sport climbing stone and setting, and explaining
that there are other areas of Italy that are not Rome, Milan, or the climbing
area of Arco.
The Ligurian area is just off to the East of Nice, France ย
the actual main road is the A8 out of France which turns into the A10
once you cross the France/Italian Border. The drive from the Nice Airport
is about 1.5 hours to the Castelbianco villages. There are toll roads about 12
Euros to get there ย you will require coins to get out of France, the Italian
tolls take North American credit cards, but the French oneยs did not.
Leaving the Nice airport can be a bit of an issue ย it does
get pretty confusing very quickly and just off a plane, but once on the A8
going to Monaco you just need a heads up for the closer coastal towns to the turnoff,
like Imperia, then Alassio, then Albenga SP 582 ย this is the one you want.
Leaving the toll you want to go left on SP 582 and head towards Cisano Sul Neva,
about 10 minutes up the road. You will drive through the village, then notice a
sign to Martinetto and an Esso gas station ย you want to go left here. This is
the road that runs the entire Valley Pennavaire.
The climbing is pretty amazing, you have either side of the
valley ย sun or shade ย Tufas, overhangs, techy climbs, burly climbs and the whole
scale for most climbers ย from 5.8 to 5.14 (5 to 8c). For more information and photo's - Oltrefinale Article on sportandmixedclimbing.com It's a personal article in english about our trip to the area - some solid information. Cheers, jd
Hi i am going to finale in september. do you have some surgestions for sectors with overhanging routes in about 5.11 - 5.12c we have talked about climbing in finale ligure. but we bring our own car, and dont mind driving a bit to some fine crags either.
Hi Bo, got to Oltrefinale - it offers plenty of really steep stuff from 7a to 8a, especially - Antro di Castelbianco (for 7c climbers and up), - Terminal (some really nice sub 7a stuff and nice, not quite that steep 7a and above) - Euskal (some 6b and 6c, then a huge roof and overhang with 7b and up) - Colosseo (again a lot in the 6a-7a range and a few harder ones) - for hot days: Chiusa, Enoteca (lots of 6b and 6c stuff, slightly overhanging, crimpy) Have fun!
How far from Finale is it?? Bo Finale is exellent it has lots of sectors around, i spent 15 days on early June tww years ago and it was Hot. I would suggest Strapatente Cave and as i remember it has shade in the morning.El anfiteatro is a classic one i think a lil bit greasy but it has nice routes. In the other hand this guys recomend Oltrefinale that might be less polished as they said its a newer area.
Thanks for the answers - and please recommend more especially if you know about sectors with massive overhangs/roof's around 7a-7c :-) i will maybe going for my first 7c, but i'm best at climbing roof's/overhangs with big holds :-) - i loved the grande grotta in kalymnos :-)
Bo, Oltrefinale is excellent - for 7a - 7c. hit up Andro di Castelbianco, the namesake crag - it's fully steep, BUT old school grades - don't expect any easy grades. Euskal is the same - so there you have it. good luck - there's more info on the sportandmixedclimbing website - cheers, jd
Thanks for the article I will write about it in the news once I am home. We also invite everyone to write articles like this. Send them to [email protected]. A tips for doing the best routes is to Create a Tick List through the 8a data base.
Hi!
We're planning a trip to Nice in Desember and January, and are thinking about going to the Oltrefinale area. Does anyone know how the conditions are during Des/Jan?
