Hi, I'm planning to travel across those Countries in the next two weeks, and I'm looking for some climbing advices. Anyone can suggest me some nice crags? tnx in advance.
There is no rock climbing in Denmark, exept if you go to the tiny island of Bornholm in the Baltic Sea. There are gyms in most of the bigger cities though. In Sweden and Norway there are countless possibilities, so it would help if you could be a bit more specific as to what you prefer - sport, trad or big walls etc - and also what part of these countries you are going to visit.
Hi, I'm looking for sport climbing routes. We are planning the trip in these days so I don't know exactly which part we are going to visit. Probably we will decide also based on the crags position. Our idea is to reach North Cape through Sweden and come back through Finland. tnx
Talking about sport climbing the Gรถteborg area in the West coast is the best area in Sweden. Norway offers much better climbing than Finland and if your goal is the North Cape my suggestion is to skip Finland.
Cant say that I know that Norway has better sport then Finland as I have never climbed there but yeah I reckon it does as the landscape is way better, but Jens on what opinion would you say to skip Finland (or have you climbed here), there are some quality areas here as well... @Granze, Check out 27crags.com , a lot of the Finnish areas are marked there, there is also a page called Slouppi that has some topos and a discussion board if you want to ask any questions about climbing in Finland. Also if you do come to Finland, please be careful when it comes to parking and other access issues. ps: if you drive way down south to Helsinki, just give me a shout and if I'm not too busy at work, and the weather is good I can show you around the area, or at least if you want to do some bouldering.
On your way you should pass by Gรถteborg, it has lots of nice crags. Get this guide book: http://www.gbg-guiden.info/site/index.php and try visiting Hyltebergen, that is a great crag! Enjoy your trip!andrei
@ Sakari: I am afraid you are missing the point. He said he only had two weeks and this is the only reason I said he should skip Finland. I have heard you have nice climbing there but as I consider the climbing and the scenary in Norway to be one of the best in the world, my suggestion is Norway and then he could pass by Gรถteborg which has the best crags in Sweden.
"Hell" is a nice sport crag in Norway. Steep climbing on pockets. It's less than one hour from Sweden if you come that way (see map here ). I don't have any photos from the crag, but I'm sure other people have, for example I know these photos . The guidebook is for sale in local sport shops here and probably also some shops in Sweden, but many of them are sold out at the moment. Our climbing club (NTNUI Tindegruppa) is working on a new guidebook. You may also find an online guide , but note that it contains barely half of the routes and the approach description is wrong. Anyway, if the weather is nice there will be plenty of people there to hang out with and get info from, at least in the weekends and in the evening. Sun sets around 8.30-9.00pm. Norway is generally more famous for trad climbing and big walls (Kjerag, Hurrungane, Romsdal/Trollveggen, Mongejura, Lofoten, Kvalรธya, etc) and ice climbing, but we have plenty of steep rock so there are also many nice sport crags. There are many other well-known sport crags in Norway that I don't know much about. You may find information via Google, for example here: http://home.online.no/~mariusbe/nor/areas.html http://fjellforum.net/viewtopic.php?t=21001 Like some other people said, if you have two weeks and want to drive to North Cape, you could drive through Gรถteborg and enter Norway, then cross over to the coast and follow a route with nice scenery up to North Cape. For example you can do sport climbing in Oslo/Drammen, then drive to Stryn (Beachen), go to Hell (haha) close to Trondheim and continue up via Bodรธ, Lofoten, Narvik, Tromsรธ to North Cape. However, that sounds more like a lifelong project - it's a long drive on slow roads! The return could be via Sweden for faster roads :) Have a nice trip!
Hi Granze, Seeing that you just have two weeks and are planning to reach North Cape through Sweden, I would be sorry to say that there are not many options for sport climbing. If you really want to do climbing at that high latitude the only option could be Henningsvรฆr, Lofoten islands, which was believed to be the most beautiful village in Norway. The climbing itself is traditional but the access is right next to the road, nevertheless there are many options like bouldering and sport climbing but do not expect to find Italian limestone faces up there. Sweden is quite flat up there until you get close to the border with Norway, so everything seems to point to the neighboring country.
If you wonder why A0 says Sweden is flat and the others tell you Denmark and Finland are also not very steep, you may have a look at the first photos that come up if you search for the different countries on Google: http://www.google.com/images?q=sweden http://www.google.com/images?q=finland http://www.google.com/images?q=denmark ...and, finally, compare with some typical photos of Norway: http://www.google.com/images?q=norway :D
