Trigger Finger

hey doc!!! ive got some sort of injury on the base of my ring finger, and from that a small cyst has grown,,,ive been off for about a month, climbing just easy stuff,,,ice 3x a day and anti-inflamatories,,,ive done some research and just found out what maybe is my problem, trigger finger...could u help me out in where i can heal from this,,what steps should i take thanks
Hi stefano There are two tendons extending the the fingers last two bones, the one extending all the way to the fingre tip actually passes through the one going the the middle phalanx (the middle bone in the finger) about at the base of your hand. A disturbance in this passage will cause the finger to "catch" and tweak loose again, that is what you call a trigger finger. In this case you will most of the time have to have an operation to clean up the passage. In your case I am kind of doubtful about the diagnosis to me this sounds more like a tendon sheath rupture with the sheath rolling upp and creating a tender noduli - if this is the case an cortison injection , rest and rubber ball squeezing rehab with a slow and progressive return to climbing will do the trick. Remember - most important - I can only make an educated guess - you should get a sports medicine trained MD to examine and diagnose your injury - this will avoid loosing a lot of time trying remedies for something you actually don't have Best of luck Björn
