Stiff fingers in the morning?!

Hi. I'm pretty new to climbing, and of course i've been climbing too intensive thees past couple of weeks. Anyways, lately i've been waking up in the morning with stiff fingers. Not just stiff but I can barely bend them at all.. I start off with small movements trying to strech them and get them warm. After about 1 hour of these movements they are OK and i can bend them however i want. During this process, if i bend the finger to "hard" it feels almost like the fingers joint will dislocate. When i'm warm and climbing i don't feel a thing, not even when i crimp or pinch. Am I just sore, or is it more serious? Been resting for a couple of days now, but still isn't better.. What should i do? (Sorry for my bad english) /Anders
Hi, I think you should go and se a physitian / doctor. Its probably just an inflamation of the joints however fingers are pretty important in everyday life and especially for climbing so I would not wait and see. Also you should try som anti inflamatory cream. Dont climb at all thill you feel your fingers have compoetly recovered
I had the same problem when I started climbing. I got it from beeing to strong in crimps to fast, and crimping everything. I did stupid stuff as doing pullups in a narrow ledge in full crimp and campusing in crimp position. In the beginning I allso expierenced stiff, sore fingers in the morning, but with climbing they felt normal again, Therefor I kept on climbing. But I kept on crimping hard, so it got worse, and my fingers were stiff and sore all the time. Even if I tried to climb. In the end I had to climb less and change my way of climbing. What worked for me, was a small brake but the long term solution was climbing in a different way. I had to learn climbing with an open hand an only crimping when it was really neccesary. So I recommend, keep on climbing, but stop crimping untill your fingers feel normal again. In the beginning only climb on big positive holds. Train your ability to hold everything with an open hand. When your fingers are better, try climbing on all sorts of holds with an open hand. You will expierence that your open hand gets stronger and it feels more natural to climb in that way. Sometimes of cause you need to crimp, but if you don't overdo it, it shouldn't give any problems. But wait with crimping to your fingers are better and the stiffnes and sorenes is away.
Hi Anders Sounds like overuse symtomsCut back a little bit longer- take a mild antiinflammatory (eg Naproxen) twice a day for 10 daysIf this works -start climbing but crimps and gradually increasing to intensity If not see a qualified physician Björn
I have use Universal Nutrition's Animal Flex, they worked very well for my finger joints problems. Essentially you should try a Glucosamina + Condroitine supplement.
