sprained ankle

Hi doc  My problem is my ankle I sprained when climbing and falling off so my foot kind of bended inside and took part of my weight on it. It happened almost a month ago and the thing, ankle,is still bit swollen from both sides.. Doctor took only x-rays and made sure no bones were broken plus said that soft tissue -ligaments- propably were just badly strained but not fully broken off. I took first week with the sticks and few weeks after that with a aid of this ankle brace. No climbing or other sports in 3weeks. just walking after that. Now its quite ok to climb peacefully but for example running, massive heelhooks etc. are no option. Do you think the healing process is taking too long and am I slowly destroying my ligaments/foot by not waiting and resting the bastard enough? Doctor also said that sports are OK, as long as "I can take the pain".. :D  Many thanks!
Hi From your description this is a typical sprained ankle injury- that is a suppinating force has tore the ligaments between the fibula and the outside of the foot. If you have a persistent swelling on the outside of your foot in front of your ankle - do a really tight compression wrap of the ankle for 20 minutes and repeat this procedure twice in 2 days time- this will force the torn ligaments in contact with the bone. When healing progress is obvious start working on a balancing plate to strengthen your ankle stabilty Björn
That's quite handy Bjorn, I did mine about the same time but unfortunately it was the inside of the ankle which took the brunt of the impact!  Physio says its the first one he's seen on the 'inside'!  As this is the main load bearing ligament will it take longer to heal?  I'm still doing gym work, rowing etc but no climbing, I'm not that much a dumb ass! Bill
Oh, and will it be susceptible to the same type of injury recurring again?
If you do your homework - stbelizing og a balance plate - No! if not -yes Björn
