Hello, I have not climbed since January 1st 2011 and have lost use of my right hand. I sustained an injury to the tip of my middle finger crimping on an overhang at the end of December. I have pain in this area randomly and also when i use my middle finger in any way. I have full range of motion and there is no visible swelling, but if i flex it too many times, do pullups, or anything that involves my middle finger, i get a relatively sharp pain in that area of my finger. I have tried putting my finger in a brace for 2 weeks but it hasn't really done anything. I've also received a cortisone shot and it has had no effect. Any ideas?
Wait and see what the doctor has to say, but may be extensor tendon at the DIP joint; see: http://www.aafp.org/afp/2006/0301/p810.html Note that for several injuries that this site discusses, they suggest up to 6 weeks of splinting followed by buddy taping. If you can't find any way to get to a hand specialist etc, which seems ideal, extending the rest may be the answer. I had a volar plate tear, not what you have, but also discussed on that page, which took almost 5 months to heal in the absence of appropriate splinting etc.
Hi this may be apartial split in the insertion of the tendon- it should be unloaded but thoroughly stretched for a couple of weeks. Than step it up slowely. See earlier discussion on tendon healing in this forumBjörn
