Dr 8a

pain flashes in elbows

Hi Dr 8a, I´ve climbed sport routes for over one year now ; I usually train with friends at a little private bouldering wall, where until now I used to train resistence for routes. However, since they got me into Bouldering,I also tried training bouldering with them (they are undoubtely better than i am). I´ve quit training resistance in the gym,and for the last two to three months, I´ve been trying to climb difficult boulder problems with them, mostly four to five powerful moves (after 20 min warming up with light climbing).   The problem came 3 weeks ago, when I began feeling this flashes of pain,to call them so,in my elbows. It´s not a permanent pain; it dissappears when I´m home or so,but when I do this powerful moves it feels like stings in my elbow. Sorry,I don´t know how to describe it better, just as stings or flashes of pain in the elbow bone. It feels allright when I climb light routes, but when it comes to doing something "hard", feels like stings.       Do you think this may be tendinitis? If not, what do you think it´s the problem? And what would be the sollution?  Many thanks beforehand !  Alex
Hi Alex - from the information supplied I would think this is a joint problem rather than the triceps tendon- your elbow joint is midly inflamed - as allways the inflammation might subside if yoy cut back to high volume easy climbing, use antiinflmmatory drugs for a couple of weeks and keep the elbow warm all the times ( neoprene support, heat immersion) Remember - most important - I can only make an educated guess - you should get a sports medicine trained MD to examine and diagnose your injury - this will avoid loosing a lot of time trying remedies for something you actually don't have Best of luck Björn
Hi Björn, Thanks for your quick answer,i´ll try the antiinflammatory drugs! Just one question.            Could you tell me how could I establish it myself,if it´s the triceps tendon? I ask because I don´t trust my doctor that much (some issues in the past). I´m totally aware that it would be just a guess from my part, but how could I do that? I mean, what does a trained MD do,in order to be able to say,yes you have a triceps tendon injury? Thanks again, Alex
Hi The Involvment the triceps tendon would be obvious if extending fore on the arm was impaired - increased pain/loss of power when mantling Björn
