Hi dr 8a. I recently fractured my collar bone in bicycle accident and I am going to have surgery. I can move my arm and hand but I can not lift my arm very high. I am not supposed to even try to lift it now. Have you dealt with this type of injury with climbers before? Is surgery a good idea? How much recovery time are we looking at? Thanks for time.

Without surgery your shoulder will never be stable in pressing type movements but fairly ok in general climbing, I think surgery is a good idea but you will have at least 8 weeks comletly off climbing than a slow successive return.
