Beginner or expert, how to decide

hi. i'm trying to do my under grad disseration on the use of imagery in university boulderers but i have to break them into 2 groups. beginner and expert. anyone have any ideas how i can do this. base on grade, climbing experiance, have a test boulder or what. i'm pretty limited by cash and time so nothing too fancy. any ideas would be greatly recieved.
its a difficult problem. in route climbing, many of the best climbers have said that 'hard' climbing starts at F7b+, so you could maybe take a grade like font 7a (i think this would be the lowest you would use). otherwise you could split them into dedicated boulderers or part time (ir=e route climbers who boulder now and then.
