The best boulderers do not train structured
With the increasing media focus to promote and spread structured training, it is interesting to know that most of the best boulderers in the world do not train in a structured way. It seems that in bouldering it is good enough to just be fanatic driven by challenges.
All Top-5 in the 8a ranking game for both male and female, and other top guys like Graham, Woods, Hukkataival and Robinson, do not follow a strict structured program. At the same time, nowadays many of the best rock climbers and almost all competition climbers follow a training regime.
The number one reason for this is of course that when it comes to combining power and endurance, it has been proven that some kind of periodization is often better. On the other hand, boulder power training is often best executed when going for projects simply just because you are more motivated to try harder.
Some guys are obviously most motivated by following a structured training system and probably even for the boulderers, this is good once in a while. But do not think this is the only way forward just because of the megaphone message from coaches and the media.

Ondra flashes 3*8C in two weeks
โI stopped focusing on competition bouldering after last yearโs World Cup in Prague, partly because I can already feel it on my body, especially in my shoulders. The modern competition style, with a lot of jumping from one hold to another, is very demanding for the shoulders.
