Alex Honnold Puts Up "Too Big To Flail"

While being filmed by Big Up Productions, soloer Alex Honnold has put up a very impressive new highball on Luminance Block in the Buttermilks in Bishop, poignantly named "Too Big To Flail". Just right of The Golden Rule, the 45-foot line was first sent on top rope, then over a massive 34 pad landing collected from friends and passer-by. Says Wills Young, "It is fairly low angle, an off-vertical wall, and has some of the sweetest rock in the area, water-and wind-polished with glassy crimps and some delicate, balancy climbing. With the moves up high being complex and feet-intensive, this is likely the most serious proposition in the Buttermilks." Link to Young's Bishop Bouldering Blog. Here's a comment from Honnold in a PlanetMountain interview posted by ClimbingNarc: "This might be the biggest line that I’ve seen at the Buttermilks but it’s hard to say for sure because there is so much rock out there. It’s definitely rare though to find such a high-quality line on such good rock. Geroge Ullrich had worked the same line in July, and was looking to make an ascent. Read about this on the bottom of Ullrich's blog. Photo by Wills Young.
