The world's fastest 8c+ climber, Steve Townshend, is 36 and 190 cm

Steve Townshend, member of 8a since 2000, has done four trips to Railay projecting Greed 8c+. This January he made another high point with his amazing speed climbing perfectionist style and he is 190 cm tall.

I clearly remember Greed being called 8c since nineties.

if you are tall you are heavy and if you are heavy you have to be fast :) simple math

He is not heavy, actually he´s only 73 kgs which is a quite low weight for 190 cm. Besides that, his legs are skinny, and this always helps

I love how 8a as always makes the statement "The world's fastest 8c+ climber" in the title. A statement based on no facts what so ever on something more or less impossible to measure and quantify. Great reporting as always! 73 kilos is really nothing for 1.90, so as far as I tell he has all the advantages of being tall and flexible without the usual drawback of added weight. Besides, 8c/8c+ is by no means impossibly hard or require insane finger strength, like people over 80 kg's climb 9a.. The video is very cool tho!

@Henning Wang: just curious, which climber weights over 80kg and sends 9a?

To be 190 cm and 36 years old and climb so fast on a 8c (+) is unique and something the community could learn from. Adam Ondra is the best and he is the fastest 9a climber out there :)

I have checked and actually the 8c in the topo seems to be a mistake. The FA gave it 8c+ and then it was an 8c mistake in the topo and acyually in the latest topo it is 8c+.

You are mistaken, FA called it 8c. All ascents in 8a database are marked as 8c. Pavel Kořán called it 8c. Then maybe 15 years later FA said something like 'I think you can call it 8c+'.

I have confirmed that FA Alex Catlin gave it 8c+ when he put it up. By mistake it was given 8c in the topo and this grade has been used by the three guys in the 8a data base.

What's sensational about the send? 73kg is not an outstanding weight for a climber, 8c not a crazy grade and sport climbing doesn't care about the speed.

Adam Ondra is the best climber in the world and also one of the fastest. Steve is climbing faster and that could inspire other to climb faster which could make them send harder. Steve's technical skill is sensational as well as his strategy. Interview is coming up also with comments from Ondra.

No rests - this might become the new official ifsc lead climbing style. :-D
