Lucifer 8c+ by Claire Buhrfeind (19)

Claire Buhrfeind reports on Instagram that she has done Lucider 8c+ and Omaha Beach 8b+ in Red River Gorge on the same day. The 19 year old won all the three disciplines at the Youth World Championship and she is with 8.90, the fastest female climber performing at a high level in Lead and Bouldering. In other words, she is one of the candidates for a medal in Tokyo. (c) Matty Hong

Progress from 8b to 8c+ seems enormous, but like in many cases of other climbers, who mainly focus on comps, probably only means she found some time to go outdoors and confirm her (already known) high climbing abilities.

Very strange prediction, Jens. Few day ago you fiercely advocated it is *counter-productive* to seriously train speed before 2020, so if she started already in 2017, she would have no chance even to qualify for Tokyo, yet to win a medal...

Claire has been a successful Speed climber for many years and is actually the only female climber to compete on a high level in all three disciplines.

We do not know how good she would have been in Lead and Boulder if she stopped training Speed. In comparison to seniors, it seems Youth have easier to adopt to become relatively fast in Speed.

If I would have been her trainer, I would have told her to focus on Lead and Boulder because the only way to make it to the Olympics would be to have super good results in those disciplines. In her last Speed World Cup she was #23 so such result will not help her so much in the qualification... on the other hand, once she is in Tokyo, she will have great chances to win that discipline giving her very good ranking points.

Actually she won two of the disciplines at Youth Worlds, but was the highest ranked combined climber with 4th in Speed.
Fantastic to see how well she is doing this trip on rock. So impressive.

Pretty impressive as Ondra singled it out as one of the harder ones for the grade there. He sent it 4th go the same trip he flashed Southern Smoke Direct (9a).
