Why are excuses a successful strategy?

Training/Jens: Mental training is normally based on creating positive thinking and increasing your self-confidence in competition situations etc. However, among climbers instead excuses are a successful strategy. In an 8a poll, out of 600 votes: "What feeling give success before an ascent? 23 %: I always believe 100 % 55 %: No thinking - just climbing 22 %: Low expectations and excuses Why do you think that excuses can be a successful strategy? I have some theories :-)
