Climber of the year 2007-10-17

  1. (1) Usobiaga

    #1 WC Lead:

    , Black Diamond, Ternua, Kirolgi

Patxi has competed since the mid 90’s and he has been runner up in the three last world championships. Since 2003, he has done 44 straight WC and overall he has been: 4 – 5 – 6 – 1 and 2007. Outdoors he has done more than 20 onsights 8b+ and harder. Since a year boyfriend and trainer to #46 Irati Anda. – This is a very good but tough challenge for me. You know, previously I just focused on my self in the gym now it is like a battle of frustration for me. Very hard indeed but I do like it. She is tough but truly wonderful.

  2.  (9) Graham
    #3 8a Lead:
    #3 8A :
    Petzl, Prana, BEAL, 5.10

Dave has been the 8a Climber of the year five years out of seven. Last year he was injured for four months. But besides from that he has more or less 72 straight months of being the superior combined 8Aa ranking leader.

Dave is very outspoken with opinions and beta on all the hard routes/boulders in the world. He is something like a genius, as he can describe and display, in detail, all the hard sequences including how his friends do them. Strong ideas on ethics and grades. He was actually the first person who stopped the inflation grades in bouldering, downgrading some 15 of the hardest ascents he had done. Dave has a very strong interest and passion for the climbing community and he says that we have to make climbers ‘mature’ when it comes to ethics and grades. 8a thinks that Dave is a very good role-model and inspiring climber who always creates headline.

A funny thing is that in all interviews and whoever he is talking to, he always says he is not strong. It is like a mantra that – I am not as strong as the rest of the gang. He says it so often and with a such sincere meaning that you actually understand that this must be his inner feeling. – I am so weak so I could kill myself! That is what you hear while he is working the crux’.

Mother of two boys, Kaden (9), Kyler (7), and two girls, Jayne (4), Olivia (2). ‘
My husband and I both work full time as registered nurses.  We try to climb either at the local gym during the week, or in our small basement gym my husband built. We climb mostly outside on the weekends.  My husband Mike, and I take turns going out while the other stays home to watch the kids.  Sometimes we get a babysitter and climb together, but we end up going out together with the kids a lot too.  The girls love to play and run around in the dirt while we climb, and the boys have started to like bouldering.’
