torn miniskus on left knee

torn miniskus on left knee
Surgery through arhroscopy as fast as possible - well heal in days with proper physiotherapy Björn
same here - left knee meniscus. had surgery in 2001, then in 2005, and now it's time again :( the previous times i had 8 and 9 weeks on crutches. seems like my body heals very slowly; the knee was still hurting and at the size of a football after several weeks... hopefully that doesn't mean i'll need 10 weeks this time!
its the first time ive read dr8a and have to wonder on the quality of information being provided.(im an emergency doctor with 10yr experience, with a special interest in trauma, by the way) question = i wonder how the patient knows they have a tear?  MRI is the definitive imaging modality of choice, although an acutely locked knee will score you surgery in the majority of casesMeniscal tears are often associated with other injuries, eg ACL, MCL and these should be excluded. once a meniscal tear has been diagnosed, there are 2 main treatment options, depending on symptoms, size and location of tear and age/health of patient, these include conservative and surgical conservative managment. i know a few climbers who have tears and just left them. as long as they avoid certain movements then it doesnt bother them, if small enough they may even heal. the opposite side to this is that the tear may extend if any further damage is done, if the climber is somewhere more remote and the knee then locks in position, then its a long hop to the emergency department, (of which i have personal experience.) in the typical climber the injury is most often from, and exacerbated by, performing a drop knee or high rock over or just jumping off badly surgical correction may involve repair of the meniscus if the tear is amenable to this (preferred to removal) in this case the knee will be immobilised and non weightbearing for 6weeks, which has costs.. resection of the meniscus allows pretty much immediate resumption of activity, but increases the chance of arthritis in later life. good luck
Hi there doc This forum is just à guidande never diagnostic I have some 30 plus years of sport medicine under guidance of some of the worlds best sport med doctors. Here in Sweden as Well as in USA if there is a young athlete with severe impairment in function we usually perform diagnostik arthroscopy if there is à clinical evidence of à meniscus tear and the MRI support it Naturally conservative treatment with physiotherapy and NSAID is usually tried first Regards Björn Alber.
